Pre-Conference Workshop: Audiovisual Carriers and Content in Archives

When: Wednesday, May 13th  1:00-5:00pm MDT

Description: This workshop equips participants with the essential skills to identify, assess, and preserve at-risk audiovisual collections. From identification and handling of legacy formats like magnetic tape to navigating modern content digitization workflows, you’ll learn to bridge the gap between analog history and digital preservation/access. Through hands-on demonstrations, we’ll also explore storage, appraisal, and triage strategies to combat media degradation and obsolescence. Learn first steps to secure your institution’s heritage by turning "obsolete" media into enduring digital assets.

Learning Objectives

  • Identification, handling, storage, and some format specifics of the most common AV types, and resources for the identification of rare formats.

  • Methods to physically and intellectually arrange content and physical media carriers.

  • Basic best practices in the digitization of AV content

  • Basic best practices in digital preservation of AV content

  • Considerations in appraisal (both physical and content-based)

Title: Embodying the Archive of Early Modern Performance: Textual artefacts returning to the stage

Dr. Knowles outlines the process by which plays were created for performance during the Elizabethan and Jacobean period, paying special attention to the textual artefacts left behind and their place within the performance culture of the period. This discussion culminates in the story of the First Folio, printing practices, and the continual modification of Shakespeare’s texts to this day. Next, Dr. Knowles analyzes contemporary staging and acting practices connected to the performance of Shakespeare to demonstrate how the archive is embodied in contemporary performance, noting how performances journey from the early modern period to textual artefact to enhance and diminish contemporary performance and interpretation.

SCOTT C. KNOWLES, PhD, (he/him) is an associate professor in the Department of Theatre, Dance, and Arts Administration at Southern Utah University (SUU). His scholarship focuses on the intersections between cognitive science, emotion, and theatre, with specific emphasis in directing and dramaturgy. Currently he serves as the Co-Director for the Wooden O Symposium and Shakespeare Studies at SUU. As a director he works on theatre for social change, involving audience, company, and community in issues beyond the walls of the theatre through a variety of outreach approaches. Most recently, he has served as a dramaturg for Lyric Repertory Company, Kayenta Center for the Arts' New Play Lab, and Flagstaff Shakespeare Festival. In 2017, Scott was honored with SUU’s Distinguished Faculty for Diversity and Inclusion Award based on his work with The Laramie Project.
