Registration is now open for the Utah State Historical Society’s free statewide history conference. This year’s conference theme is “Transportation and Movement,” and will be held on September 27-29, 2018. Registration for the conference is free, and includes lunch (RSVP required).
The conference program includes workshops (Thursday), educational sessions, panels, and performances (Friday), and tours (Saturday). A number of Utah’s book dealers will also be present, as will Utah history publishers and history organizations.
The event will serve as an introduction for Utah’s and the nation’s 150th anniversary celebration of the construction of the transcontinental railroad (completed at Promontory Summit, Box Elder County, Utah Territory on May 10, 1869), which will be happening next year. More information about what Utah is doing to acknowledge and celebrate this anniversary at Spike150. The program will also include the premiere screening of the PBS documentary Journey to Promontory, the story of the Transcontinental Railroad, set for delivery on PBS stations during the late fall of 2018.
The keynote address on Friday will be presented by David Haward Bain (author of Empire Express: Building the First Transcontinental Railroad). Bain is the author of dozens of books and articles. Empire Express is an epic narrative history covering not only the dramatic struggle to link the oceans with twin bands of iron but three decades in which America doubled in size, fought three wars, and discovered itself.
