Job Opportunity–Salt Lake City, Utah

The Utah Division of State History Library and Collections program is looking to fill the position of digitization intern. Under the supervision of the Library and Collections Digital Librarian, the employee will prepare collection material for digitization. The employee will create both basic and interpretative metadata for collection material, barcode collection material for digitization identification, physically organize collection material in manageable batches for transport to digitization partner institutions, manage quality control workflow, scan and edit images as needed, and other project tasks as deemed necessary. Collection material includes unique, historic photographs, negatives, and/or manuscripts. This position is a time limited (temporary) position with the employee working part time, between 20 and 29 hours per week. The hourly rate is $15.00 per hour, no benefits. Required skills:

  • Knowledge of Utah history, general history, and/or humanities
  • Ability to create brief historic narratives for descriptive metadata according to standards and best practices
  • Knowledge of Excel, project management tools, and ability to work with home-grown digital ingestion tools
  • Ability to create individual quality control measures as well as follow institutional quality control measures
  • Ability to create individual workflow measures as well as follow institutional workflow measures
  • Ability to take on management of small projects
  • Ability to handle the minutia of projects while remembering project as a whole
  • Ability to work on 3-5 projects simultaneously
  • Ability to work in a team environment

Preferred skills:

  • Knowledge of Dublin Core metadata standards, Getty Thesauruses of Geographic Names, GeoNames, and Library of Congress Subject Headings
  • Skills in handling special collection material, mostly photographs and manuscripts, but may include other collection material such as AV material and born digital objects
  • Some collection processing and editing or creation of finding aids
  • Knowledge of digital scanning standards and equipment
  • Knowledge of Photoshop software for editing digital objects while preserving a balance with original content
