The Conference of Inter-Mountain Archivists (CIMA) will be hosting a number of pre-conference activities during the Nevada Library Conference, on Wednesday, October 3rd, 2012. Two workshops will be offered: “Archives 101” and “Preservation Issues for Paper.” In addition, all CIMA members, workshop participants, and interested NLA members are invited to the CIMA Nevada Archives Caucus luncheon, to discuss the state of Archives in Nevada. A description of these events is provided below.
This workshop will be a general overview and introduction to the basic principles, methodologies, best practices, and practical administration of archives and manuscripts, the institutional programs that care for these materials, and the professional community that supports this work. It is intended for non-archivists who have an interest in, or responsibility for, historical records or collections of an archival nature. Topics include archival institutions and programs, selection and appraisal, arrangement and description, reference, electronic and digital records, and non-text formats. Sponsored by CIMA.

Preservation Issues for Paper
Preservation issues for paper documents and published pages will be discussed in this fast paced 4 hour lecture-based workshop. With a focus on archival and manuscript materials, your instructor will discuss paper making history, archival storage, temperature and relative humidity, and other issues. Demonstrations will include paper cleaning and mending, paper humidification and flattening, de-acidification, backing with paper, and encapsulation. If time allows, we will address case specific issues; so participants are encouraged to bring sample items to class for discussion and evaluation.
Sponsored by CIMA.
